Del Camino Equestrian Academy located in Scottsdale, Arizona, provided classical riding instruction and complete horsemanship instruction for adults and youth for twelve years.  It filled a unique and much needed place in the local horse community, and was  embarked upon by a couple who had the wherewithal to “retire” from the rat race at an early age and pursue a service to people and horses.  Faced with Scottsdale development, aging bodies, and the desire to be able to travel while still able, the Academy owners have closed the lesson, camp and training portions of their business.  Del Camino Equestrian Enterprises now applies its enthusiasm and expertise to services and products that assist small horse businesses, commercial and non-profit, in achieving profitability and sustainability.  We offer business development, management and marketing services to horse businesses, along with resources for owners of older horses.

History of Del Camino

The original Del Camino Ranch was founded in 1950 by Hal and Arlyne Clay, and was first located on Tatum and Shea Blvd. in Phoenix, where they raised and trained Thoroughbred racehorses.  Del Camino moved to 380 acres on Tatum between Bell Road and Union Hills around 1955, and became equally involved with Arabians, breeding, training and showing at the national level in multiple disciplines.  By the 1980's this tradition was continued by their son Gary Clay and his wife, Lisa Péwé.  In 1995, Mrs. Arlyne Clay sold the ranch.  The lesson program was "spun off" as "Del Camino Equestrian Academy" and moved to Sandspur, where it remained until mid-2007.

Here the new owners, Joe and Barbara Beard revised and expanded the lesson and camp programs into a robust and successful curriculum for adults as well as youth, and developed both a leasing and an adult horsemanship program. Both had been involved with horses from their youth, and brought strong business management, marketing, and people training skills to bear on the business side of running a vibrant stable.

Recognizing demographic trends of both the horse industry, and Arizona and Phoenix in particular, the Beards identified a need to serve adult horsepeople who wanted to achieve excellence and be involved daily with their horses without competing or maintaining horse property.  They also recognized that improvements in horsekeeping and veterinary care was increasing the percentage of horses that were active well into their twenties and thirties.  Del Camino structured horsemanship, leasing, equitation and other programs to blend the needs of these two populations – human and horse – for the health and happiness of both.

The Beards developed a proven method to ensure that Del Camino's lesson, camp, leasing, and other programs were consistent and enabled riders of diverse ages and interests to safely pursue their love of horses.

students had the opportunity to discover their own favorites, and to progress in their skills.  School horses included Arabians, Appaloosas, Quarterhorses, a Tennessee Walking Horse, and others.  Most were retired or semi-retired show horses, or working ranch horses.  Likewise, lesson tack included Hunt (forward) seat, Dressage, and Western saddles to fit adults and youth.  You did not need to own a horse or a saddle to ride at Del Camino.
